The Formation of Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society
This is the time when Mount Kilimanjaro Porters Society (MKPS) was founded. It is the moment when the need for collective approach into handling of porters affairs arose and the association was formed to address the issues that were prevailing and focus on meeting challenges as well as means to prepare for remote challenges in such a way that such challenges can be transformed into opportunities.
The Registration of Porters and Guides
At this time, we commenced the registration of the available porters and guides which included existing and new porters and guides for whom this organization was found. It was done in order to create a much easier means of contacting them, bringing them together, sharing crucial information that relates to their work and environment as well as giving them life-skills and enabling them to have a more sustainable approach to handling their porter tasks in both high and low season. That includes the porter rights, duties and responsibilities.
Adoption of Sustainable Trekking
This evolves from the individual social responsibility of guides to the environment and their work relationship with one another and clients in a way that has positive effects to the environment. It includes the protection of nature by afforestation (planting of advisable species of trees in the parks and reserve areas attached to the mountain so as to protect the natural vegetation and all species of organisms found within). Additionally, it helps the porters to udnerstand proper ways of managing sanitation and cleanup operations for the mountain. Also, it stretches to voluntary initiatives which include firefighting as well as other foreseeable and remote calamities that need collective effort in curbing.
